How to Read a Backtest Report on MT5: The 7 Metrics That Matter

Net profit lies. These are the seven numbers in an MT5 Strategy Tester report that actually tell you whether a strategy is worth trading.

Risk warning: trading carries a high risk of capital loss. This is educational content, not financial advice. A strong backtest never guarantees live results.

Open any MT5 backtest report and the first thing you see, total net profit, is the most misleading number on the page. A strategy can show a beautiful profit and still be untradeable. These seven metrics tell the real story.

1. Profit Factor : the king ratio

Gross profit divided by gross loss. Below 1 loses money; above 1.3 is workable; above 1.6 is strong. But beware: a suspiciously high profit factor (3+) on few trades usually signals over-fitting, not genius.

2. Maximum Drawdown : the crash test

The deepest peak-to-trough fall in equity. This is the pain you must be able to survive : emotionally and financially. A strategy with great profit but a 40% drawdown is unusable for most traders, and instantly fails a prop firm challenge.

3. Recovery Factor : bounce-back ability

Net profit divided by maximum drawdown. It measures how efficiently the strategy earns relative to the risk it takes. Higher is better; below 1 means the worst drawdown is larger than the total profit.

4. Sharpe Ratio : consistency

Return adjusted for volatility. A higher Sharpe means smoother, more repeatable returns rather than a few lucky spikes. It’s one of the best single gauges of how « comfortable » a system is to trade.

5. Expected Payoff : average gain per trade

The average result of a single trade. It must comfortably exceed your spread and commission, or the edge disappears the moment you go live with real costs.

6. Win Rate + Reward/Risk : the inseparable duo

Win rate alone is meaningless. A 40% win rate is highly profitable with a 1:3 reward/risk; a 70% win rate loses money with a 1:0.3 ratio. Always read the two together.

7. Number of trades : statistical reliability

A perfect curve built on 20 trades is luck, not edge. Aim for 100+ trades across different market conditions before trusting any of the metrics above.

The problem with reading reports by hand

Cross-checking seven metrics across dozens of backtests, while remembering the healthy thresholds for each, is slow and error-prone. It’s exactly the kind of repetitive judgement that should be automated.

FAQ

What’s the minimum acceptable Profit Factor?

Above 1.3 is generally workable; 1.6+ is strong. Be suspicious of anything above ~3 on a small sample : it usually means over-fitting.

How many trades make a backtest reliable?

Aim for 100+ across different market regimes. Fewer than that and the statistics aren’t meaningful.

Does a backtest guarantee live results?

No. It’s necessary but not sufficient, always confirm with out-of-sample and demo forward testing. See the full backtest guide.

Is this compatible with prop firm trading?

Yes : drawdown and consistency metrics are exactly what you need to verify before risking a funded challenge.

Do the metrics reflect live trading?

Only if the backtest used quality data, realistic spread and commission. Garbage in, garbage out.
