Market structure is the foundation everything else in Smart Money trading sits on. Get BOS and ChoCH right and your order blocks, fair value gaps and entries all fall into place. Get them wrong and you’ll keep buying tops and selling bottoms. Here’s the simple version.

1. BOS & ChoCH: simple definitions

BOS (Break of Structure)

A Break of Structure is when price closes beyond the previous swing point in the direction of the trend. In an uptrend, price closing above the last swing high is a bullish BOS : it confirms the trend is continuing. In a downtrend, a close below the last swing low is a bearish BOS.

ChoCH (Change of Character)

A Change of Character is the first break against the current trend. In an uptrend, a close below the last higher low is a ChoCH, an early warning that momentum may be flipping. It’s often the first sign of a reversal, and a key entry trigger when it happens inside a higher-timeframe zone.

BOS = continuation

Trend keeps going. Trade in the direction of the most recent BOS.

ChoCH = potential reversal

Trend may be shifting. The cleanest trigger inside a valid zone.

2. The 3-step method (clean)

  • Step 1 : define the bias: on the higher timeframe, are we making higher highs/lows (up) or lower highs/lows (down)?
  • Step 2 : identify the signal: a BOS to trade continuation, or a ChoCH to anticipate a reversal.
  • Step 3 : enter only on a zone + confirmation: wait for price to reach an order block or fair value gap, then confirm with a lower-timeframe structure shift before entering.

Never trade a BOS or ChoCH in a vacuum : it’s thecontext (zone + bias) that makes it tradable. See the full ICT Smart Money strategy.

3. Reading it on MT5 : quick example

Mark the recent swing highs and lows on your chart. Draw a line at the last significant swing. When a candle closes beyond it (not just wicks through), you have your break. A close beyond a swing in the trend direction is a BOS; the first close against the trend is a ChoCH. Use closes, not wicks, that single rule filters out most false signals.

Read structure automatically

The MSOB Dashboard labels BOS and ChoCH in real time on MT5, alongside order blocks and fair value gaps, so you see the structure shift the moment it happens, on any pair or timeframe.

4. How MSOB automates the read

Manually marking swings across multiple pairs is slow and subjective. A structure dashboard detects swing points, labels each BOS and ChoCH, and combines them with order blocks and FVGs into a single confluence view : turning hours of chart-marking into a glance.

5. BOS & ChoCH FAQ

What’s the difference between BOS and ChoCH?

A BOS is a break in the direction of the trend (continuation). A ChoCH is the first break against the trend (possible reversal).

Should I use candle closes or wicks?

Closes. A wick poking through a level is not a confirmed break, waiting for the close removes most false signals.

What timeframe is best?

Define structure on a higher timeframe (H4/H1) and refine entries on M15/M5. Structure on very low timeframes is noisy.

How do BOS/ChoCH fit with order blocks and FVGs?

Structure sets the direction; the order block and FVG give the zone; a lower-timeframe ChoCH gives the entry.
